“Hopes for Menage a Trois in Vegas”

NATPE NEWS: LA-based format broker Small World IFT is set to push Nippon TV variety format Menage a Trois to US and international buyers in Las Vegas this week.

Former Sony and Fox World format exec and Small World chief Tim Crescenti has high hopes for the Japanese format, which sees three reality shows with different although connected storylines merge into one.

The format aired for 10 years on Nippon TV where it garnered a whopping 40% share. The show is available in one-hour or 30-minute formats.

Crescenti told C21 the format was racking up serious interest from international buyers as viewers' attention spans diminish. He added that he is seeing much greater demand for reality fare in the wake of the US writers' strike.

"In the US, buyers are starting to take lots more risks. You're starting to see the major networks pick up shows that would only have previously aired on cable," he said.

Crescenti recently sold Nippon formats Silent Library and Uta Suta in the US to the Fred Silverman company.

An untitled paper format from Danish producer Babyfoot has been sold to ABC.
